India Is Throwing Away Solar Power During Blackouts — Here’s Why

India is living an energy paradox: record electricity demand, dwindling coal stocks — and at the same time, billions of units of clean solar power being deliberately thrown away. New data shows the country turned away nearly 1.8 billion units of renewable electricity in July and August alone, even as households sweltered through power shortages.

    The Numbers Behind the Waste

About 4.2 percent of India’s total solar generation could not be absorbed by the grid in July and August, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), as reported by Reuters via The Hindu BusinessLine. The problem is getting worse, not better: between April and June, the country held back 14 percent of its solar output, and peak power demand touched a record 270 gigawatts while coal plants ran on dangerously thin reserves.

Why Clean Power Gets Switched Off

The culprit is not a lack of sunshine — it is a lack of wires. India’s transmission network was built for an era of big coal plants, not for solar farms scattered across deserts and rooftops. When midday solar floods the grid faster than transmission lines can carry it away, operators curtail — deliberately switch off — renewable generators to protect the system from overloads and blackouts.

Battery storage, which could soak up midday surplus and release it after sunset, remains scarce. Coal plants, meanwhile, cannot ramp down fast enough during the day and back up at night without breaching their technical limits — so clean power gets cut simply to keep coal plants running at minimum load.

    The Stakes

This matters far beyond India. The country is the world’s third-largest solar generator, with about 168 GW of solar — nearly a third of its total power capacity — and a target of 500 GW of clean energy by 2030, up from 304 GW today. Every curtailed unit is clean energy already built and paid for that never reaches a home, undermining both climate goals and developer revenues. As clean technology continues its rapid advance, the bottleneck is increasingly not generation but the grid itself.

The fix is unglamorous but clear: massive transmission investment, grid-scale batteries, and market rules that reward flexibility. India has drawn up an $83 billion roadmap for grid capacity — the race now is whether construction can catch up with the solar boom before the waste becomes the story of the transition.
